A bioarchaeologist studies human remains recovered from archaeological contexts, with the goal of understanding the lives of people whose deaths are often the only direct evidence we have of their existence. The work is reading skeletons. Bones record nutrition, disease, occupation, injury, age at death, and (with increasing precision) ancestry, mobility, diet, and cause of death. The skills of identifying age, sex, ancestry, and trauma from skeletal remains transfer directly to forensic anthropology, which works with medical examiners, law enforcement, and human-rights investigations. Some bioarchaeologists move between archaeological and forensic contexts; others specialize. Mass-grave investigations, war-crimes documentation, and disaster-victim identification are forensic-anthropology applications that draw on bioarchaeological training.
The emotional dimension of the work is rarely discussed in undergraduate education. Bioarchaeologists work with the remains of children, of people who died violently, of people whose lives were marked by long illness or systemic deprivation. The careful, respectful documentation of these realities is the work, and it is not separable from the affect of working with what the bones reveal. People who do this work over careers find their own ways of holding the responsibility; students entering the field should know that the work asks something of you beyond technique.
The standard path is a degree in archaeology or biological anthropology, followed by a master's and typically a PhD specifically in bioarchaeology, osteology, or biological anthropology.
