InferenceEngineers could historically develop and evaluate only a small number of design options, because each required time-consuming manual modelling and analysis. They relied on experience to pick which options to pursue, implicitly gambling that the best solution was among the few they chose.
Generative/parametric design and analysis surrogate models produce and evaluate dozens of optimised alternatives against structural, cost, and carbon constraints — 'instead of creating one solution, teams can evaluate dozens of optimized alternatives' (AEC reporting).
Design exploration far faster and broader; the engineer who can recognise the good solution across a large option space gains leverage over the one who deeply analyses a few.
