A climate projection is useless to a council. "Two degrees by 2050 under a medium-emissions scenario" cannot be acted on by somebody who has to decide whether to spend money on this culvert, this care home's ventilation, or this railway embankment. You are the person who converts one into the other — taking climate model output, downscaling it, combining it with local exposure and vulnerability, and producing something an ordinary decision-maker can actually use. That is the whole discipline of climate services, and it barely existed twenty years ago.

The distinct contribution is usability. The attribution scientist reveals what happened, the measurement scientist establishes what is true, the modeller projects what comes; you are the one who makes any of it operable by somebody who is not a scientist and does not have time to become one. That is Explanation as a technical discipline rather than a soft skill, and doing it without either over-claiming or drowning the audience in caveats is genuinely hard.

The demand is now official and it is embarrassing. The Climate Change Committee's 2025 progress report to Parliament found UK adaptation "inadequate" across all sectors, with progress too slow, stalled, or heading in the wrong direction, against a backdrop of record heatwaves and the wettest eighteen-month period on record [official, CCC 2025]. Roughly 355 climate adaptation roles are advertised in the UK at a given time, within nearly 3,000 climate-change roles overall, and local authorities are being supported through structured adaptation toolkits precisely because they lack the in-house capability [survey_aggregator, LinkedIn / Adzuna / Local Partnerships 2025].

Your enemy is false precision, and everyone will ask you for it. Decision-makers want a number and a date. The science gives you a range and a probability. Handing over a fake number to be helpful is the single most damaging thing you can do in this role, and learning to give someone a genuinely useful answer that is honestly uncertain is the actual professional skill — and it takes years.

Adaptation is the unglamorous half of climate and it is where the work is. Mitigation gets the attention, the funding announcements and the moral energy. Adaptation is drains, shade, ventilation, embankments and heat plans, and it is what determines whether the next heatwave kills people. If you can tolerate being in the less exciting half of the argument, you will be needed for your entire career.

And you do not need a PhD, which almost nobody tells students. This is a serious scientific role that runs on a master's, good modelling, and the ability to hold a room. The research route is not the only door into climate science, and this door is much wider.

Environmental science, geography, physics, engineering or a numerate social science degree; a master's in climate change, adaptation or environmental management is the common credential and is usually sufficient without a doctorate. Employers are local authorities, consultancies, infrastructure operators, health bodies, NGOs and national agencies. Data and GIS skills plus demonstrable communication ability are what get you hired. In Portugal, IPMA's climate scenarios and the climate portal work with Instituto Dom Luiz under the ADAPT programme is the reference public capability [official, IPMA 2025]. Volunteering with a local climate or resilience group at eighteen is a real and underused way in.
