A dental laboratory technician or dental technologist's distinct contribution is making the things that go inside a patient's mouth — crowns, bridges, dentures, veneers, orthodontic appliances, implant frameworks, and surgical guides — from scratch, to a specification that is both functionally precise and aesthetically invisible. The daily texture depends on whether the lab is traditional, digital, or hybrid. In a traditional lab, the technician works at a bench with wax, plaster, porcelain powder, metal alloys, and a stream of hand tools — sculpting, casting, layering, and polishing. In a digital lab, the technician designs on screen using CAD software, sends designs to a milling machine or 3D printer, and finishes the output by hand. Most modern labs are hybrid, and the technician moves between both worlds. The best work requires an eye for colour, shape, and translucency that is closer to sculpture than to manufacturing.

The role is invisible to patients. Most people assume the dentist makes their crown; they do not know that a separate, skilled professional in a laboratory designed and fabricated it from a digital or physical impression. The pay is typically lower than for dentists despite the skill level, and the profession has historically had less visibility and professional recognition than the clinical roles it supports. A three-year diploma or degree in dental technology from a GDC-approved programme, or a dental technician apprenticeship, followed by GDC registration [statutory_regulator, GDC 2025]. Clinical Dental Technicians (CDTs) — who can see patients directly for removable prosthetics — require further training and a separate GDC registration. In Portugal the route is through a licenciatura em prótese dentária (3–4 years) with ACSS registration [official, ACSS 2025]. Entry rewards manual dexterity, patience, an eye for colour and form, and comfort with both digital design tools and traditional bench craft.
