In words

An ombudsman investigator's distinct contribution is being the person who actually reads both sides of a dispute a company and a customer can't resolve between themselves, and forms an independent view of what a fair outcome looks like. The primary pull is Justice: converting a right that exists on paper — to a fair service, an accurate bill, a properly assessed claim — into an outcome one specific person receives, without either side paying for a lawyer or setting foot in court.

Most complaints are resolved at this informal stage once both sides see a clear, evidenced view of what actually happened; only a minority need to go further, to a final, binding decision.

There's a guide here if you want one

Kitsune can talk through anything on this page — whether it might suit you, what to do next, questions this page doesn't answer. Everything here is yours to read either way.

Firms and schemes are increasingly using AI to triage and route incoming complaints, which means the cases reaching an actual investigator are disproportionately the hard ones — evidentially messy, emotionally loaded, or genuinely finely balanced [complaint-handling and AI-triage market analysis, 2026]. The Financial Ombudsman Service alone handled 214,600 new complaints in 2025/26, down from a record 305,700 the year before, and new investigators typically start around £27,000, rising to a typical range of roughly £32,000-£46,000 with experience [Financial Ombudsman Service annual complaints data, 2026; from salary and job-posting data, Financial Ombudsman Service investigator salary data, 2026].

There is no law degree or professional qualification required. Large schemes such as the Financial Ombudsman Service, the Housing Ombudsman, and the Energy Ombudsman recruit graduates of any discipline directly, training the evidential and decision-writing skills on the job; a genuine interest in fairness and a clear, calm writing style at interview usually matter more than a specific degree subject.
