The postdoctoral position is the training period between PhD and independent research career — a transitional phase in which someone who has proven they can complete a major research project (the dissertation) learns whether they can do so independently, sustainably, and at sufficient scale and rate to be competitive for a faculty or senior researcher position. The gradient is Discovery: the postdoc's job is research, and the measure of the postdoc is what gets found and published.
In STEM fields, postdoctoral experience has become effectively mandatory for tenure-track faculty positions — not doing one removes a candidate from consideration at most research universities. In humanities and social sciences, postdocs are less universal but increasingly common, especially in the form of fellowship positions at research institutions or competitive national fellowships. The postdoc phase extends the training pipeline, which benefits the institution (trained researchers working at below-market compensation) and may or may not benefit the postdoc, depending on whether the position provides genuine professional development or simply extends the dependent phase of an academic career.
The most distinctive feature of the postdoc experience is its dependency structure. The postdoc works within someone else's research program, on problems partially shaped by that person's funding, in an environment where the PI's priorities and personality shape the entire experience. A postdoc in a well-mentored, well-funded, intellectually rich lab with a supportive PI is a very different experience from a postdoc in a high-pressure lab with unclear mentorship and a PI who views postdocs primarily as research labor. The variation is enormous and is one of the most underexamined variables in academic career decisions.

The postdoctoral period has lengthened substantially over the past three decades. In many STEM fields, the average postdoc now spends three to five years in one or more postdoctoral positions before either obtaining a tenure-track job or leaving academia. Including the PhD, the full training phase from starting graduate school to beginning an independent career can be fifteen years or more. During this period, compensation is significantly below what the degree and experience level would command in industry, and the institutional status is junior regardless of how productive the individual is.
The PI relationship is the most important variable in a postdoctoral experience and the most difficult to evaluate before accepting a position. A PI who is supportive, present, and invested in the postdoc's career development produces a qualitatively different experience from one who is distant, exploitative, or primarily focused on their own research productivity at the expense of the postdoc's development. The institutional structures for postdoc protection are limited — postdocs are difficult to fire but also difficult to advocate for when mistreated, because their career depends on the PI's recommendation letters.
The transition out of the postdoc phase is a cliff: the position ends, and the person either has an independent position or doesn't. In a good year, in a field with openings, with a strong publication record and a well-networked advisor, a competitive postdoc can move into a faculty or senior researcher position. In a lean year, or in an over-supplied field, the same person may find no viable path and have to leave academia — carrying a PhD and two to five years of postdoctoral experience into a job market where those credentials create as many perception challenges as they resolve.
PhD → application to postdoctoral positions (advertised through institutional job boards, lab websites, and disciplinary networks) → one or more postdoc appointments → application to tenure-track faculty positions, industry research roles, or national lab positions. The application process for postdoctoral positions varies by field: in some (particularly experimental biosciences), postdocs often contact PIs directly and are hired into specific funded project slots; in others, positions are advertised broadly. Fellowship postdocs (funded by national agencies or private foundations) are more competitive but carry greater independence.
