A tree does not show you its problems. The decay is inside; the root plate is buried; the defect that will fail is often the one nobody is looking at. Your job is to find what is hidden and make it legible to people who will act on it — an owner, a court, an insurer, a planning authority. You do visual tree assessment first, then escalate: sounding, resistance drilling, decay detection, sometimes aerial inspection, occasionally root investigation. Then you write it down in a way that will hold up when it matters.
The distinct contribution is diagnosis. Others in this field grow, tend, or defend trees; you are the one who reads them and tells everyone else what is actually true. This is why the role sits on Revelation rather than Preservation, even though the outcome is usually a tree preserved — the daily texture is investigative, and the thing you are producing is knowledge, not a change in the tree.
The commercial reality is more interesting than students imagine, and it is mostly about buildings. A large slice of consulting arboriculture is the tree-and-property intersection: subsidence claims where a tree is blamed for a cracked wall, mortgage and insurance reports, arboricultural impact assessments for planning applications, and expert witness work when it all ends up in dispute. You are writing documents that can be used against you. A tree risk report is a professional opinion with liability attached — if a tree you assessed as acceptable fails and injures someone, your reasoning gets examined.
