You are trying to stop the next thing that will erase a species from the landscape. Ash dieback arrived, was first detected in the UK in 2012, and is now very widespread — it changed British woodland permanently within a single career [official_regulator, Forest Research]. The spruce bark beetle *Ips typographus* sits on the UK Plant Health Risk Register as a live concern [official_regulator, Defra]. Your work is the surveillance, interception, and containment that determines whether the next arrival is a footnote or another ash dieback.

The distinct contribution is endurance of the resource against biological loss. This is Preservation in its most literal form — you are trying to make sure a tree species still exists here in a hundred years. The forester grows trees; the tree officer defends individual ones from people; you defend the whole population from organisms that do not negotiate.

The day-to-day is surveillance and diagnosis. Walking survey routes, examining crowns and bark, setting and checking traps, taking samples, sending them for identification, mapping distributions, and feeding a risk register that decides national policy. When something is confirmed, you move to containment: statutory plant health notices compelling felling or destruction, movement restrictions, tracing where the infected material went and who else has it. It is epidemiology, applied to trees, and the fieldwork looks a lot more like detective work than like gardening.

You will mostly lose, slowly, and the wins are invisible. A successful year is one in which nothing happened, which is impossible to celebrate and difficult to fund. Meanwhile the pathogens that got in before you arrived are still spreading, and part of your job is managing the decline of a species you cannot save rather than preventing its arrival. Biosecurity people describe a specific kind of grief — watching a tree you know disappear from the landscape at the rate of a few years per county.

The politics are heavier than the biology. Telling a nursery its stock is condemned, or a landowner that a statutory notice requires them to fell a stand at their own cost, makes you unpopular in ways that have consequences. The global plant trade is the vector for most of what you are fighting, and the economic interests on the other side of your recommendations are substantial and well-represented.

And it is under-recognised to a degree that annoys the people who do it. This is arguably the highest-leverage work in the entire field — one interception can be worth more than a decade of planting — and almost nobody outside forestry knows the role exists.

A degree in forestry, plant science, ecology, botany, or plant pathology is the usual foundation; plant pathology or entomology at postgraduate level is a strong differentiator. Entry routes run through Forest Research, the Forestry Commission's woodland and resilience officer posts, Defra's plant health inspectorate, and equivalent agency roles [official_regulator, Forest Research / Defra 2025].
