Roughly a third of England's public water supply comes from underground, and in parts of the south-east it is most of it. You work out what is down there: how much water an aquifer holds, how fast it recharges, which way it flows, how long it takes, whether it is connected to the river at the surface, and whether the thing that leaked in 1974 has reached the borehole yet. You do this with boreholes, pumping tests, water chemistry, isotopes, geophysics and numerical models — because you cannot look.
The distinct contribution is finding out. Everyone else in this field manages water they can see; you are producing knowledge about a body of water the size of a county that nobody has ever observed directly, from a handful of holes in the ground. That is Discovery, honestly labelled, and it is why hydrogeologists talk like detectives.
The contamination side is a distinct professional world. Landfills, fuel stations, old industrial sites, agricultural nitrate, and the PFAS problem that is currently rearranging the field's priorities — someone has to determine what is in the groundwater, where it is going, and who is going to pay for it. This work sits directly on top of law and money, and it is growing.

Groundwater is slow, and it makes you slow. Water may take decades to travel from where the rain fell to where you are standing, which means today's pollution is tomorrow's problem and today's problem was somebody's decision in the 1980s. You are working on a system with a memory longer than your career, and it changes how you think about consequences permanently.
The pay is decent, not dazzling, and rises meaningfully with chartership and specialism. And nobody knows the job exists, which is the whole opportunity. A student who likes geology thinks the options are oil, mining, or academia. There is a third thing, it is about drinking water, it is in demand, and it is invisible from the outside.
Geology, earth science, environmental science, or a physical science degree with substantial geology; an MSc in hydrogeology is close to a standard entry credential in the UK and several universities run well-established programmes. Employers are environmental and geotechnical consultancies, water companies, the Environment Agency, and the British Geological Survey. Field and drilling experience early is what separates people who can interpret a log from people who have only read about one. Groundwater's decades-long memory means interpretive judgment about a specific aquifer stays scarce and human regardless of modelling speed.
