Most of what you know about the world that did not happen in your immediate physical vicinity, you know because someone whose professional job it was to find out and report it found out and reported it. The structural pull at the field level is Revelation: taking what would otherwise stay hidden, scattered, or known only to the few people who were there and making it visible to a wider public. A reporter at a city council meeting, a foreign correspondent in a conflict zone, a science journalist explaining a new study, a sports writer covering a team — each is doing a version of the same structural work. The field exists because a society in which only the people present at events know what happened at those events cannot govern itself, regulate its institutions, or hold its powerful accountable.

Discovery sits alongside Revelation and dominates in the investigative branch of the field. An investigative journalist is structurally a researcher: spending months tracing documents, building source networks, and assembling a picture from fragments that no single source possesses. The work is closer to detective work than to the popular image of journalism. The transmission moment — the published story — is the visible end of a long, often unglamorous, document-and-interview-heavy investigation. Most investigations never produce a publishable story. The ones that do are not the field's daily texture; the daily texture is the slow accumulation of what might eventually become one.

The honest read. Journalism has the highest robustly-human protection profile of any unregulated field assessed. The field's production layer is heavily AI-exposed; its core functions (sourcing, verification, accountability, judgment) are structurally protected. The mismatch between where AI is disrupting (entry-level production) and where the field's human value lies (mid-to-senior practice) creates the field's defining entry-level gap.

Journalism is the field most directly exposed to LLM capabilities because its core output IS language. The dual-use dynamic is stronger here than in any other field assessed: AI threatens the supply of journalism while creating tools for journalism's verification and fact-checking mission. The field is in an authenticity arms race that has no close parallel.
