Development in England now has to leave nature measurably better off than it found it, and someone has to design the landscape that delivers that and prove it with a number. You assess the habitat baseline, run the metric, and design the planting, the grassland, the wetland, the hedgerow and the connectivity that turns a required percentage into an actual functioning place — then set out how it will be managed and monitored long enough for it to become true. This is where landscape design met statutory obligation and became something new.
The distinct contribution is endurance. Everyone else in this field is judged at handover or a season after; you are designing for a habitat condition that has to be demonstrably met decades out, with a management plan and a monitoring regime attached. That is Preservation as a working discipline — the ephemeral thing is a functioning habitat, and the job is making it last against the default, which is that it quietly reverts or gets mown.
It is also the most quantified corner of a qualitative profession, and that is the tension in the role. The metric is a number, and a number can be gamed: technically compliant habitat that no living thing uses. The thirty-year obligation is the whole game and almost nobody thinks about it at design stage.
