You translate atmospheric data into decisions. Numerical weather prediction models produce forecasts; your job is to interpret those models — recognizing where they agree, where they diverge, where they have known biases in specific weather regimes — and produce a forecast that people can act on. The forecast might be a public weather warning, an aviation weather brief, a marine forecast, or a specialized product for energy markets or agricultural operations.

The skill is not just technical — it is communicative. A forecast that is scientifically perfect but incomprehensible to the emergency manager who needs to decide whether to evacuate is not a good forecast. The best operational forecasters are translators in the deepest sense: they understand the atmospheric science, and they understand the decision context of the people who will use their information.

Severe weather forecasting is the highest-stakes corner of the role. Issuing a tornado warning commits public safety resources and demands public response. Failing to issue one when a tornado occurs has consequences. The judgment calls are real, they happen in real time, and the feedback loop is immediate — you either got it right or you didn't, and you know within hours.

The psychological weight of severe weather forecasting is significant. A missed warning has consequences you will think about. An over-warning erodes public trust in the warning system. The forecaster carries both kinds of error, and the asymmetry between them — a miss can kill people, a false alarm can't — shapes the decision-making culture in ways that create real cognitive and emotional pressure.

The career ceiling in government forecasting is lower than the talent level would suggest. Senior forecaster positions pay well for government work, but the pay scale is bounded. Many strong forecasters eventually move into management, research, or the private sector not because they want to stop forecasting but because the compensation structure incentivizes moving away from the operational desk.

The private weather industry is larger and more consequential than most students realize. Energy companies, insurance companies, agricultural commodity traders, and logistics firms all employ meteorologists because weather directly affects their operations. Private sector meteorologists often earn more than their government counterparts and work on problems that are commercially consequential rather than public-safety oriented.

Bachelor's or master's in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related physical science with coursework in dynamic meteorology, synoptic meteorology, and numerical weather prediction. Government forecast positions (NWS, military weather, equivalent international agencies) typically require the bachelor's and specific coursework. The NWS internship and Pathways programs are established entry points in the US. Private sector positions may accept related STEM degrees with demonstrated meteorological knowledge. Programming competency is increasingly expected across all pathways.
