You take water that is not safe to drink — from a river, a reservoir, or an aquifer — and run the physical and chemical process that makes it safe: coagulation and flocculation to remove suspended solids, filtration, disinfection, and the ongoing chemistry that keeps the treated water stable all the way to the tap. The primary pull is Spread applied to a process rather than a product: a treatment process that works in principle is worthless until its output reaches every household in the service area, continuously, and the process engineer's job is making sure the plant that does that keeps doing it, shift after shift, without interruption.

The technical core is applied chemistry and process engineering rather than civil construction — dosing rates, contact times, filter performance, disinfection by-product control — and increasingly it is also data: modern treatment works are heavily instrumented, and reading the trend on a turbidity or chlorine-residual sensor correctly, and knowing when to intervene before a reading becomes a failure, is the differentiating skill between a competent operator and an excellent one.

Chemical, civil, or process engineering degrees all lead in, with chemical and process engineering the closer technical match to what the job actually involves day to day. Water company graduate schemes and degree apprenticeships are well established and hire consistently across the sector.
