You are the person whose job is that the water coming out of a tap in a supply area is safe to drink, every day, whether or not anyone is checking. The role runs the sampling programme that tests treated water against legal drinking-water standards, audits the treatment process's own compliance data, investigates any result that falls outside the standard, and — when something is genuinely wrong — triggers the notification and remediation process that protects consumers, up to and including a boil-water notice. The primary pull is Protection in its cleanest form: consumers have no way to check their own water before drinking it, so someone else's professional obligation stands in for that check on their behalf.

This role sits deliberately apart from `hyd`'s Water Quality Scientist / River Regulator, which protects rivers from what gets discharged into them under environmental permits. This role protects consumers from what comes out of the tap under drinking-water standards — a different statute, a different regulator (the Drinking Water Inspectorate rather than the Environment Agency), and a different failure mode: a river regulator's worst day is a fish kill; this role's worst day is a public health incident traced to the supply.

The evidence and documentation standard is exacting, because a compliance record has to survive scrutiny from a regulator whose entire purpose is finding the cases where it does not hold up. A significant share of the job is not sampling itself but the auditing and documentation trail behind it — chain of custody, laboratory accreditation, and a record that can be defended months or years after the sample was taken. The public profile of the role is a genuine paradox: when the job is done well, absolutely nothing happens, and nobody outside the industry ever hears about the incident that didn't occur because a trend was caught early.

Environmental science, chemistry, microbiology, or public health degrees all lead in, with laboratory and analytical experience a strong practical advantage. Employers are water companies' own quality teams, the Drinking Water Inspectorate itself (a small, specialist regulator of around fifty staff covering all of England and Wales), and environmental health teams within local authorities [official, DWI 2025–26].
