Agriculture & Food Production

Roles 5Reads like Living things, at scale

People need to eat. Three times a day, eight billion times over, every day. The systems that make this possible are some of the largest, oldest, and most underappreciated human achievements — and they are also among the most rapidly changing fields of work in the modern economy. Agriculture is not what most teenagers think it is.

The primary gradient is Creation in its oldest and most literal form: you put a seed in the ground or breed an animal, and months or years later you have food where there was none. The cycle is biological, not industrial — you cannot speed up wheat. The pace of the work is set by photosynthesis, gestation periods, ripening curves, and weather. This is one of the few remaining fields where the rhythm of the work is dictated by something larger than the calendar of the people doing it.
