Roughly half the seafood the world eats is now farmed rather than caught. That single fact is the whole field, and almost no student knows it. Humanity spent ten thousand years domesticating the land and has spent about fifty years starting on the ocean, which means this is the last major food system still being invented — and the people inventing it are alive right now, mostly in their thirties, mostly in places like Argyll and the Algarve rather than laboratories.

The structural pull is Development, and it is the honest reading of both halves of the field. In aquaculture it is literal: you take an egg and grow it into food, deliberately, and the entire professional apparatus of nutrition, genetics, water quality and health exists to close the gap between stagnant and growing. In wild fisheries it is less obvious but the same shape — a fish stock is a population that either grows or collapses depending on how much you take out of it, and the whole discipline of fisheries management is an argument about how to keep it growing while still eating some of it. One half farms the animal. The other half farms the population.
