You determine why aviation accidents and incidents happen. The work is forensic — you examine wreckage, analyze flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders, interview witnesses and crew, reconstruct the sequence of events, and identify the causal and contributing factors that led to the occurrence. The purpose is not blame; it is understanding. Aviation safety investigation is explicitly non-punitive in most jurisdictions — the goal is to find out what happened and why, so that the safety system can be improved to prevent recurrence.

The methodology is systematic and the analytical depth is substantial. A major accident investigation might involve metallurgical analysis of failed components, human factors analysis of crew decision-making, review of maintenance records going back years, aerodynamic reconstruction of the flight path, and assessment of organizational factors — the procedures, training, and management culture that created the conditions for the accident.

The end product is the investigation report and the safety recommendations it contains. The best investigation reports are narrative reconstructions that make a complex causal chain comprehensible — they tell the story of what happened in a way that allows the reader to understand not just the sequence of events but the reasons behind them. The recommendations that follow are the levers through which investigation findings enter the safety system and produce change.

You will listen to cockpit voice recordings that end with impact. You will interview survivors and families. The analytical distance required to do the work effectively coexists with the human reality of what you're investigating. Not everyone can sustain this, and the ones who can are not unfeeling — they are people who have developed the capacity to hold both the analytical and the human dimensions simultaneously.

The non-punitive framework is philosophically important but practically complicated. Investigation findings can have legal, regulatory, and commercial consequences even when the investigation itself is non-punitive. The relationship between safety investigation and judicial investigation is a persistent tension in the field, and investigators must navigate it carefully.

The career path typically requires deep operational experience before transition to investigation. Most aviation safety investigators were previously pilots, engineers, controllers, maintenance technicians, or human factors specialists who bring domain expertise to the investigative function. Pure investigative talent without operational experience is rarely sufficient because understanding what happened requires understanding how the system is supposed to work.

Prior operational experience in aviation — as a pilot, air traffic controller, aircraft maintenance engineer, or aerospace engineer — followed by specialized investigation training. Investigation authorities recruit experienced professionals and provide investigation methodology training (ICAO Annex 13 framework). Some universities offer aviation safety and investigation programs. The NTSB, AAIB, BEA, and other national investigation authorities are the primary employers, supplemented by airline safety departments, insurance investigation firms, and consultancies. The field is small and the positions are competitive — most investigators have substantial prior aviation careers.
