The criminal justice system exists because people harm each other and communities need a structured response. From the moment a crime is reported — or detected before it happens — through investigation, evidence-gathering, prosecution, sentencing, and rehabilitation, a chain of professionals works to hold individuals accountable while protecting the public and preventing further harm. The structural pull of the field is Justice: moving a situation from unjust to just, where "just" means that evidence has been gathered fairly, that the law has been applied correctly, that the punishment fits the offence, and that the system treats everyone — victims, suspects, and communities — with the procedural fairness that legitimacy requires.

Protection sits alongside Justice at the field level. Police officers patrol communities to prevent crime and respond when it happens. Prison officers maintain safety inside institutions that house people convicted of serious offences. Probation officers manage the risk that released offenders pose to the public. In each case, the professional stands between the vulnerable and the threat, and the quality of that protective work determines whether communities feel — and are — safe. The protective dimension of the field is not abstract: it involves physical presence, vigilance, and the willingness to put yourself between danger and the people you serve.
