A wellsite or operations geologist is the subsurface team's eyes at the drill. As a well is drilled, they monitor the rock coming up — the cuttings, the drilling parameters, the gas readings, the logging-while-drilling data — to know, in real time, exactly what formation the bit is in. They call the depths that matter: where to stop, where to set casing, where the reservoir begins. In modern directional wells they geosteer, steering the bit to keep it inside a target reservoir layer that may be only a few metres thick, kilometres from the rig, using nothing but the data streaming back.
The pull is Discovery, made urgent by the clock. The subsurface is unknown, the drill is revealing it metre by metre, and decisions worth enormous sums per hour ride on reading it correctly and quickly. Revelation sits close underneath, because the work is making the formation at the bit legible from indirect real-time signals; Resolution appears because problems — a drilling hazard, an unexpected pressure, a bit off-target — arrive and must be handled now.
It is the most operational, most In-Motion-flavoured role in the field, and for many geoscientists it is where a career begins — closest to the rock, closest to the action, and the fastest way to learn how the abstractions of the office map onto what the drill actually finds.

You cannot re-run the well; you call the casing point now, on the data you have, and the consequences are immediate and expensive. Rotations, offshore or remote postings, night shifts, and time away are structurally hard, in the same way mining rotations are, and the role sorts people on this early — though remote operations centres are steadily changing what the job demands geographically.
A degree in geology or earth sciences, often with a master's, and frequently entered as a first subsurface role because of how much it teaches. Employers include energy operators and wellsite-geology and mud-logging service companies. Offshore survival and medical certification are required for offshore work. Progression commonly moves from the wellsite into office-based operations, development, or exploration geology as a career matures.
