You take a solar project from "this might be a good site" to "this site is producing electricity." That journey takes 3–7 years for a utility-scale project and involves an extraordinary number of moving parts: securing land rights from landowners, navigating county and state permitting, conducting environmental reviews, securing transmission interconnection, lining up power purchase agreements with utilities or large customers, financing the project (which involves tax equity, debt, and developer equity in complex structures), procuring equipment, hiring construction contractors, and managing the build through commissioning. Any of these can kill the project at any time.

The work is intellectually substantial in a way that surprises people who think of it as "real estate plus permits." You're making technical judgments about energy yield, structural feasibility, and grid integration. You're making financial judgments about project economics and capital structure. You're making political judgments about community engagement and stakeholder management. You're making legal judgments about land contracts, tax structures, and regulatory exposure. Most successful developers have a primary skill (engineering, finance, or real estate) and developed competence in the others through experience.

The site work is satisfying in a specific way. You drive out to a piece of farmland or grazing land or industrial brownfield, you see what's there, you imagine what could be there, and over years you make it happen. The first time a project you developed sends power to the grid is described by most developers as the moment that justifies the years of paperwork.

The attrition in early-career project development is significant. Many people enter the field expecting fast-paced impact and find themselves stuck in years-long permitting processes for projects that may or may not ever get built. The successful developers are people who can hold the long timeline without losing motivation when individual projects stall or die. Patience is a core competency.

The community-engagement work is harder than students expect. Solar projects in rural areas often face local opposition — sometimes for legitimate reasons (visual impact, grazing land conversion, agricultural soil concerns), sometimes for less legitimate ones (NIMBYism, misinformation, political polarisation). Developers who think the project speaks for itself fail; developers who can sit in church basements and listen to angry farmers and respond honestly succeed. The role is more interpersonal than technical at the critical points.

The interconnection queue is the under-told constraint of the entire industry. In most major grids, the wait to interconnect a new project to the transmission system has stretched to 4–7 years, and a substantial fraction of projects in the queue will never be built. The bottleneck has become the dominant factor in project timelines and is shaping where developers can build.

Multiple paths converge here. Engineering background (electrical or civil) plus business or project management experience. Finance background plus interest in physical projects. Real estate or land use background plus energy industry exposure. Public policy background plus private-sector translation. Major employers include utility-scale developers, independent power producers, oil-and-gas companies pivoting into renewables, and a growing number of dedicated solar and storage developers. Entry-level roles are typically associate or analyst positions on project development teams; the senior-developer trajectory takes 5–10 years to reach project leadership.
