Maritime & Shipping (Commercial)

Roles 5Reads like Few people, enormous responsibility

The vast majority of world trade by volume moves by sea. This is not a peripheral fact about international commerce — it is a structural one. The physical existence of the global economy depends on a continuous flow of ships across the world's oceans, carrying containers, bulk goods, oil, gas, vehicles, and raw materials between producing regions and consuming regions. Aircraft are faster and trucks are more flexible, but neither can move global trade at the volumes and economics the modern world economy depends on. Maritime shipping is the field that operates this flow.

The pull is Spread. Maritime shipping exists to extend the reach of producers to global markets — to make it possible for Chilean copper to reach a Chinese smelter, for Saudi oil to reach a German refinery, for Vietnamese-manufactured goods to reach an American consumer. The field's reason for being is geographic scale; everything else operates within that.
