The jobs are scarce and they pay badly. Wildlife veterinary positions are some of the most competitive in the field, and salaries are typically the lowest in veterinary medicine. Many wildlife vets supplement with consulting, university teaching, or part-time small-animal practice. The romance of the work and the economics of the work are in genuine tension.
The fieldwork is dangerous in ways most veterinary work isn't. Anaesthesia of a wild animal carries risks the animal can't be monitored for. Capture operations can go wrong — an animal can wake up early, you can be in remote terrain, the team can be small. Vehicle accidents on remote roads are the leading cause of fatalities in field veterinary work. The work attracts people who can tolerate this risk; the field doesn't pretend the risk isn't there.
The conservation work is also deeply political.
